ControlThese are variables that researchers hold constant to prevent them from influencing the outcome of an experiment.If a study is testing the impact of light on plant growth, the temperature might be controlled to ensure it doesn’t affect the results.
CovariatesThese are variables that could potentially influence the outcome of an experiment. They are typically not of primary interest to the researcher, but they can affect the primary relationship being studied.In a study looking at exercise and heart health, age could be a covariate because it can influence both exercise habits and heart health.
ConfoundersThese are variables that correlate (directly or indirectly) with both the dependent variable and independent variable. This can lead to false conclusions about cause-and-effect relationships.In a study on smoking and lung cancer, age could be a confounder as older people may be more likely to have smoked and to develop cancer.
CollidersA collider is a type of variable that is affected by two or more other variables in a system. It’s called a collider because it’s where causal paths collide or come together.If you’re studying how diet and exercise affect weight, weight is a collider because it is influenced by both diet and exercise.
MediatorsThese are variables that explain the relationship between two other variables; they carry the influence of an independent variable on a dependent variable (they mediate this relationship).In research examining stress causing poor sleep, cortisol levels would be considered as mediators because increased stress raises cortisol levels which then causes poor sleep.
