Theory vs model vs framework vs logical model

Theory - self determination explains why students are motivated when they feel autonomous, competent and connected

Model - show how these components interact to drive motivation

Framework - outlines environmental influences on a child’s development but doesn’t explain the detailed interactions

Logic model - a model for a tutoring program that shows inputs, all the details which lead to students working at the right level in phonics, which leads to improved reading achievement. really focused on outcomes, focused on causality.

A simple, easy to understand example of the difference between theories, models, framework, and logic model is:

Imagine you want to lose weight.

  1. Theory: These are the ideas and explanations about why things happen as they do. In this case, it could be the theory that reducing caloric intake and increasing physical activity will lead to weight loss.

  2. Model: This is a simplified representation of how something works. For your weight loss goal, a model might be a diagram showing the relationship between exercise, diet, metabolism, and weight.

  3. Framework: This is an overall approach or system of ideas designed to guide your actions. Your framework for losing weight could include setting specific goals, planning meals and workouts, monitoring progress regularly etc.

  4. Logic Model: This is a tool used in program planning that visually displays the sequence of actions that describe what the program is and will do – how investments link to results. For your weight loss goal, it would involve inputs like time for exercise and healthier food choices; activities like gym workouts or cooking; outputs like number of hours spent exercising or meals cooked at home; outcomes such as pounds lost or increase in energy levels; and impact like improved health status or increased life expectancy.
