squared away
something I once heard Steve Smith say about being in the navy
You have everything together. You’re prepared. Your shoes are shined.
From my EDU202 newsletter (8/14/23):
Back when I used to work for IBM, I was a mess of a person. Hair was never combed (it was longer back then), clothes were always wrinkled/never fit, desk was a mess, etc.
One day, my boss pulled me aside and said “You know, when I was in the Navy, we had a saying: have everything squared away. Take care of the boring stuff; make your bed, organize your house, throw away any trash, know where your tools are. Always have your stuff in order and you’ll be prepared for anything unexpected that comes your way.”
It totally changed me. I didn’t become a new person over night, but “squared away” became (and continues to be) my goal for years.
Question-to-go: What do you need to “square away” so that you are prepared for unexpected challenges?
