repetition compulsion

Learned about this from school of life.

What is repetition compulsion?

[!NOTE] Repetition compulsion is a psychological phenomenon where a person repeats a traumatic event or its circumstances over and over again. This includes reenacting the event or putting oneself in situations where the event is likely to happen again. This “re-living” can also occur in a recurring dream, during which the event is repeated over and over, exactly as it happened. Even though the individual may feel distressed by repeating the traumatic events, they feel compelled to continue due to unconscious forces. This term was first coined by Sigmund Freud in his 1914 essay titled “Remembering, Repeating and Working-Through”.

What is the best treatment for this?

[!NOTE] The best treatment for repetition compulsion often involves psychotherapy, specifically cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) or psychodynamic therapy. These therapies can help individuals recognize their patterns of behavior and learn new ways of reacting to stressful situations. In some cases, medications may be used to manage any underlying conditions like depression or anxiety. Mindfulness techniques and self-care practices can also be beneficial in managing stress and reducing the urge to repeat traumatic events. However, the most appropriate treatment tends to vary depending on the individual’s specific circumstances and needs, so it’s important to consult with a mental health professional for personalized advice.
