Every Student Succeeds Act

Five bullets about ESSA:

  1. The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) was signed into law by President Obama in December 2015, replacing the No Child Left Behind Act.
  2. ESSA gives states more power to set their own standards for student achievement and school performance, moving away from the federally mandated requirements of its predecessor.
  3. The law requires that all students in America be taught to high academic standards that will prepare them for success in college and careers.
  4. ESSA ensures access to quality preschool for low and moderate-income families, providing early learning opportunities.
  5. Under ESSA, states are required to hold schools accountable for how students achieve and also look beyond test scores, including student engagement, access to advanced coursework, and school climate as part of their accountability systems. #edpolicy
